While Tibetans inside Tibet are endeavouring to keep their culture alive, they are suffering from increasing poverty, rural-urban inequality and poor access to education.

Education facilities and opportunities for Tibetan children are minimal. The education that is available in Tibet often suppresses Tibetan religious and linguistic identity.

As a result, many Tibetans send their children on the dangerous journey across the Himalayas to study in exile at Tibetan schools in India.

Chinese policies, particularly the railway link to Lhasa, mean Tibetans are facing increasing competition for employment and marginalisation within their own communities due to the numbers of Chinese migrants entering Tibet - leading to concerns for the very survival of the Tibetan culture.
