Dalai Lama Announces Plan To Devolve Political Role To Elected Leader Print E-mail

In his 10th March statement on the 52nd Tibetan National Uprising Day, the Dalai Lama expressed his desire to fully devolve power to Kalon Tripa, the elected leader of the Tibetan government-in-exile, a vision he has held as a young man in Tibet which has gradually been realised over the years in exile.

He said, “As early as the 1960s, I have repeatedly stressed that Tibetans need a leader, elected freely by the Tibetan people, to whom I can devolve power. Now, we have clearly reached the time to put this into effect. During the forthcoming eleventh session of the fourteenth Tibetan parliament in exile, which begins on 14th March, I will formally propose that the necessary amendments be made to the Charter for Tibetans in Exile, reflecting my decision to devolve my formal authority to the elected leader.” Read more

Global Letter Writing Campaign to Dhondup Wangchen Print E-mail

Dhondup Wangchen was arrested in Tibet on 26 March 2008 for filming interviews with ordinary Tibetans about their views on the Beijing Olympics, the Dalai Lama, and Chinese government policies in Tibet. The resulting interviews - captured in the documentary ‘Leaving Fear Behind’ - provide a rare glimpse into the thoughts, feelings, joys, and hardships of Tibetans living under occupation.

Dhondup is currently serving a six year prison sentence in Xichuan prison, which is a labor camp in eastern Tibet (Ch: Qinghai Province). Dhondup is known to have been tortured and has not received medical treatment despite having contracted Hepititis B since being in detention.

As part of an international campaign for the release of Dhondup Wangchen, supporters worldwide are sending him short, personal letters in prison. Former Tibetan political prisoners have testified to the fact that they became aware of the letters arriving at their prison from people around the world. This gave them a tremendous source of strength and encouragement.
