Don’t Torch Tibet - ATC's Sydney Harbour Bridge Action Print E-mail

ImageAhead of the Canberra leg of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Torch Relay, the Australia Tibet Council sent a powerful message to the Chinese leadership by projecting the words ‘Don’t Torch Tibet’ onto the northwest pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Will Athletes Be Free to Criticise China? Print E-mail

ImageThe British Olympic Committee (BOC) this week reignited the debate on whether athletes heading to Beijing will be allowed to voice opinions on human rights, Tibet and other politically sensitive issues by adding a controversial new ‘gag’ clause to its athletes’ contracts. After vehement criticism from opposition MPs and Tibet support groups, the BOC was forced to back away.

Human Rights Abuses Shadow Countdown to 2008 Beijing Games Print E-mail

“Instead of a pre-Olympic ‘Beijing spring’ of greater freedom and tolerance of dissent, we are seeing the gagging of dissidents, a crackdown on activists, and attempts to block independent media coverage,” Human Rights Watch said in a statement to mark the one year countdown to the start of the 2008 games.

Everest at risk as new road conquers roof of the world Print E-mail

The push to open Tibet to tourism has attracted international controversy, with China planning to build a road - and possibly a hotel - right up against the slopes of Everest itself. The new road is meant to facilitate the Beijing Olympic torch’s journey - but it has outraged environmentalists, who fear it will further damage Everest’s fragile ecosystem, already under threat from the climbing boom on its slopes.
