A Forum on Development and Change in Contemporary Tibet - 3 July 2008, North Melbourne Print E-mail

ImageA Forum on Development and Change in Contemporary Tibet presented by the Institute of Postcolonial Studies.

Since the 1980s China has embraced economic reforms on an unprecedented scale. Yet, while Deng Xiaoping’s “reform and opening up” (Ch. gaige kaifang) have resulted in material benefits for large parts of the population, many ‘minority nationalities’ see themselves marginalised by contemporary Chinese capitalism. This forum will explore how the fast pace of change on the vast plateau grasslands has affected the lives of Tibetan artists, nomads, meditators and farmers.

Speakers:
Mark Stevenson, Victoria University, will consider the possibilities of cultural renaissance in a Tibetan town in the eastern province of Amdo.

Gillian Tan, University of Melbourne, presents a view of the contemporary world of Tibetan nomads.

Gabriel Lafitte, a development policy consultant to the environment & development desk of the Central Tibetan Administration based in India, asks whether Tibetans can envision a postcolonial future

When: 7:30 pm, Thursday 3 July 2008
Where: North Melbourne Uniting Church Hall on Elm Street – off 51 Curzon Street, North Melbourne, VIC 3051
Charges: Waged: $5, Unwaged: $3, Members of the Institute of Postcolonial Studies: Free
