As we approach the 50th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising and the Dalai Lama’s exile, the Chinese Government has intensified its military crackdown in Tibet and resorted to extreme measures to silence dissent. Tibet remains off-limits to foreign journalists. But despite the risks, Tibetans are continuing to demonstrate against the oppressive policies undermining their religion, identity and livelihoods. We must support them.
Local Tibetan monk Geshe Sonam Thargye is desperately trying to find information about his niece, Sangye Lhamo. The 26 year old Buddhist nun was arrested in Tibet on Wednesday morning while participating in a peaceful protest in the Tibetan town of Ganzi in Sichuan Province. Two other nuns were arrested with her.
