Sunday, 16 March 2008

At least thirteen people have been killed, including some monks, during a demonstration at Amdo Ngapa Kirti Monastery in present-day Sichuan. Free Tibet Campaign have two eye witness accounts that put the figures at 30 or even more.

According to confirmed reports received by the Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), at least seven people have been shot dead by the People’s Armed Police (PAP) during a peaceful demonstration involving thousands of people near Amdo Ngapa Kirti Monastery this afternoon. Those killed include monks from Kirti Monastery. Hundreds of people are also known to have been injured in the incident following PAP crackdown on the protestors. The demonstration was still inprogress when the Centre received the information from an eye-witness.

The demonstration started around 11.30am (Beijing Time), when thousands of Tibetan monks from Kirti Monastery, in Amdo (present-day Sichuan Province), gathered for a prayer session. Shortly after the end of morning prayer session, the monks erupted into spontaneous protest by chanting slogans calling for “Tibet independence”, “return of the Dalai Lama” and “freedom for Tibet”. The demonstrators were later joined by other local people as they headed towards the Ngaba County government headquarters.
