Protests & Deaths In Eastern Tibetan Areas

Despite the attempted media blackout in Tibetan areas, news of further protests is filtering out. Demonstrations by monks and other Tibetans have been reported in Kardze, Luchu County and at the Dzoge Monastery.

Photographic evidence has emerged of Tibetan deaths at the hands of Chinese authorities.

Also, an Australian tourist shot some of the only independently filmed footage to emerge of the recent events in the Tibetan capital, Lhasa.

Photographic Evidence Of Bloody Crackdown In Ngaba On 16 March 2008
There have been reports that at least 20 Tibetans have been killed during protests in Ngaba in the Amdo province of Tibet (present day Sichuan Province). It has also been reported that over 20,000 people within the Ngaba province have joined demonstrations.

The protests were sparked when Chinese authorities ordered the over 20 monasteries in the area to raise the Chinese flag. Following a prayer ceremony at Kirti Monastery in Ngaba, thousands of monks started chanting “Independence for Tibet” and “Long Live the Dalai Lama.” Chinese troops stationed in the area responded with violence, but the protest spread outside of the monastery grounds. Over 400 nuns and students are reported to have also joined the protest.

The total number of deaths remains unknown.

Hundreds of Tibetan nomads and farmers protest in Luchu County
The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) has received information that more than two hundreds Tibetan nomads and farmers from Ponkor Village, Luchu County, staged a peaceful demonstration at the Township Public Primary School compound.

The protesters pulled down the Chinese national flag and hoisted the banned Tibetan national flag in its place. The protesters continue with their demonstration until the Chinese security forces came into the scene and demanded the removal of the Tibetan flag. The Tibetans refused to remove the flag and more than five truckloads of Chinese security forces were brought in to quell the demonstrators.

More protests reported from Ngaba and the Dzoge Monastery in Tibet
Over one hundred Tibetans in Ngaba staged a peaceful protest yesterday afternoon. The protestors headed towards the Township government headquarter in the main market area where protesters brought down the Chinese national flag and hoisted the banned Tibetan national flag in its place at the government headquarters. The protesters shouted slogans calling for the return of the Dalai Lama and freedom in Tibet. There is no information on the number of arrests.

At the Dzoge Thangkor Soktsang Monastery in Dzoge County, a Chinese flag inside the monastery compound was taken down despite repeated efforts by Chinese authorities to re-hoist it. The next morning a protest was led by the monks of Dzoge Thangkor Soktsang Monastery which headed towards the local government headquarters shouting slogans calling for the independence for Tibet, “Long Live the Dalai Lama”, “Release Panchen Lama” and “China quit Tibet”. The protesters, who were joined by lay Tibetans, entered the local government compound and lowered the Chinese flag, replacing it with the banned Tibetan national flag. Within a few minutes, tear gas shells were fired into the protesters by armed security forces to disperse the protesters. There is no information on the number of arrests.

At least three Tibetans shot dead in Kardze Protest
The TCHRD have also reported that at least three Tibetan protestors were shot dead this afternoon during a peaceful demonstration in Kardze County, Sichuan Province in eastern Tibet.

Around 300 Tibetans from all walks of life had staged a peaceful protest demonstration in the main market square calling for “independence for Tibet” and “Long Live the Dalai Lama”. It is reported that Chinese security forces fired indiscriminately on the protestors from a nearby rooftop.

Sources say that 15 Tibetan protestors were also injured.
