More Protests in Beijing
Activists from Students for a Free Tibet have staged two more courageous protests in Beijing. The first, an hour before Friday’s opening ceremony, saw three activists display Tibetan flags near the entrance to the Olympic park and the Bird’s Nest stadium. The second, on Saturday, saw five activists breach heavy security around Tiananmen Square and lie down wrapped in Tibetan flags close to the giant portrait of Chairman Mao at the northern edge of the square above the entrance to the Forbidden City.

Rudd Meets Wen, Agrees To Pursue Human Rights Discussions
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, speaking after a private meeting with Wen Jiabao on Friday, has committed to continue raising human rights issues with the Chinese leadership, including Tibet. However, for now it seems these discussions will be limited to the confidential Australia China Human Rights Dialogue. The next round will take place later this year.

“I said to the Chinese leadership that on questions of human rights, of religious freedom, of Tibet, of internet freedom, that these continue to be concerns, that we would continue to prosecute these concerns, both through the discussions we have just had and through the bilateral human rights dialogue which lies ahead between Australia and China.”
