Tibet Battered by Severe Snow Storms
Like the polar regions, the Tibetan Plateau is bearing the brunt of global warming. Spiralling greenhouse emissions are causing frequent extreme weather events on the plateau, jeopardising the livelihoods of 6 million Tibetans.

In recent years rising temperatures, melting permafrost and reduced precipitation have all been making life difficult for Tibet’s traditional nomadic herders and farmers. Last week one of the worst snowstorms in memory wrought havoc in Lhunze and Cuona (Tsona) counties of Lhokha (Chinese: Shannan) Prefecture in Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). As of 31 October, the Chinese state media (Xinhua) had reported 9 people dead and a further 2,000 herdsmen evacuated.

Dalai Lama ? Situation in Tibet Worsening
On Monday, amid some of his most blunt and anguished remarks yet, the Dalai Lama reportedly told a packed audience in Tokyo’s the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan that the situation in Tibet under the current Chinese leadership is ?hopeless?.

?They understand what we?re talking (about). So I think (Chinese) Communist leaders should have more spiritual mind (rather than thinking only about) money, power, money, power, money, power,? he said.

The Dalai Lama said once there is change in the current political situation caused by fear and ignorance, then a ?positive decision, positive agreement can be reached within a few days.?

China Fires Back at Dalai Lama
Chinese officials have strongly criticised the Dalai Lama’s recent comments on the situation in Tibet and lack of progress in the Tibet-China dialogue.

One commentary put out by China’s state-controlled media (Xinhua) has labelled the remarks ?an attempt to draw public attention and sympathy? while renewing bogus claims that the Dalai Lama is seeking independence for Tibet and instigating unrest inside Tibet.

55 Arrested in Connection with March Unrest

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy has been closely monitoring a recent spate of sentencing and new arrests.
