You may wish to include some of the following points:
? The sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights provides cause for both celebration and sombre reflection.
? While many countries have seen tremendous improvements in human rights over the last 60 years, the situation for Tibetans remains very grim.
? In a new era of ethnic reconciliation, marked by Kevin Rudd’s apology to indigenous Australia and the election of an African-American to the US presidency, a peaceful settlement with the Tibetan people would boost the international standing of the Chinese Government immeasurably.
? The international community, including the Australian Government, must not remain silent while the Chinese Government continues to abuse the basic human rights of Tibetans.
? Tibetan culture has enriched the lives of many thousands in Australia and across the world. The loss of Tibetan culture is a tragedy for both the Tibetan people and the world at large.
? 2009 will see the fiftieth anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan Uprising.
