ATC Tibet Update 11 August 2010

TAKE ACTION: Free Runggye Adak
Three years ago Runggye Adak, a brave Tibetan nomad, stepped on stage at the annual Lithang Horse Festival and gave voice to the desperation of millions of Tibetans. He was detained and sentenced to eight years for "provocation to subvert state power".

On the third anniversary of his arrest Tibet supporters worldwide are stepping up the campaign to free Runggye Adak and highlight the oppression of Tibet’s nomads.

Federal Election Update
There are still nine days of the campaign remaining. So if you’re yet to contact your local candidate to find out their position on Tibet and what they’d be willing to do if elected, please follow these three simple steps

Spotlight: Seat of Grayndler
In key electorates across the country Tibetans and Tibet supporters have been meeting their candidates to discuss Tibet. Grayndler is one of a number of progressive inner city seats where the Greens are on the rise and the correct electoral dynamic exists for a possible upset. Grayndler is also home to 45 Tibetans and has become a second hub of Sydney’s Tibetan community after Dee Why. Read more

According to China’s state news agency, Xinhua, 1,042 people are still missing and 42 seriously injured. Modern Tibetan Nomad Touring Australia
Last March, Tibetan American Lhakpa Tsering left his job and said goodbye to his family and started to ride his motorcycle from the UN in New York around the world on a shoestring - modern nomad style - to raise awareness about Tibet. After visiting Brisbane last week, Lhakpa is about to reach Sydney. The Tibetan Community of NSW is hosting a welcome party for Lhakpa this Saturday in Dee Why. All invited. Tibetan City2Surf Team Raises $7,000
Those watching Sunday night’s coverage of Sunday’s City2Surf may have caught sight of a giant ‘Free Tibet’ banner at the final bend of the iconic Sydney race. This year ATC teamed up with our good friends at The Tibet Effect to enter the first ever Tibetan team in the 14km classic. The ‘iwalk4Tibet’ team raised over $7,000 to support the work of Australia Tibet Council and made quite an impact along the way! View pictures

ATC extends a warm thankyou to the ‘iwalk4Tibet’ team and to Tenpa Dugdak, Rob Keldoulis and many others for their generous support.
