Stand Up for Tibet on 2 November Print E-mail

1 November 2011

Tomorrow is the Global Day of Action on Tibet. The recent wave of immolations in eastern Tibet, reflecting the desperation faced by young Tibetans living under China’s oppressive regime, sends a strong message that the international community must act urgently.

Australia Tibet Council and the Sydney Tibetan Community will join Tibetans and supporters in over 60 cities around the world to Stand Up for Tibet and to draw the Australian government’s attention to the critical situation in Tibet.

The Tibetan communities in Melbourne and Canberra have similar public events. Please join them and Stand Up for Tibet.

Yesterday Senator Sarah Hanson-Young raised the issue of the Tibetan immolations through a motion in the Senate, calling on the Government to urge China to cease its repressive measures against the Tibetan people. At this critical time of a deteriorating situation in Tibet, the Senator’s motion was voted down by the two major political parties in Australia. Please read the transcript for more information.

The ATC team is back in Canberra tomorrow. We will be meeting key officials working on China in the government and our parliamentary friends and will ask the Australian government to take a more robust and courageous stand on the situation in Tibet.

Over the last few weeks, more than a thousand of you have emailed Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd. Thank you for speaking out for Tibet. We understand that DFAT has raised the matter of the Tibetan immolations with its counterparts in Beijing. However we still have not heard any public statement by the minister. We will continue to engage the government on addressing the crisis in Ngaba.

If you are not in Sydney, Melbourne or Canberra tomorrow, you can still be a part of the Global Day of Action and Stand Up for Tibet. Here are three online actions you can take immediately:

1. Sign the Avaaz petition ‘Save Tibetan Lives’ to Prime Minister Julia Gillard and five other world leaders with the most influence on China to speak out for the Tibetans.

2. Sign the ‘I will Stand Up for Tibet’ pledge and support an initiative to build global diplomatic pressure on China.

Please join the Tibetans and support their call for freedom and justice.
