In 1995 the Dalai Lama recognised the six-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the 11th Panchen Lama, the second most important spiritual leader in Tibet. Just weeks after, the young boy and his family were abducted by the Chinese authorities. He became the world’s youngest political prisoner.

Tibetans, supporters, human rights organisations and world governments have consistently urged China to release the Panchen Lama, but these appeals have gone unheeded. For two decades, the Chinese government has denied requests from governments and the UN for access to the Panchen Lama, claiming he was leading a normal life and does not wish to be disturbed.
