Tibetan Uprising Day 2026

On 10 March 2026, our message was loud and clear: Australia must affirm support for a future reincarnation of the Dalai Lama appointed only through Tibetan Buddhist traditions, without interference from the Chinese Government.

Australia Tibet Council (ATC) was joined in front of Parliament House in Canberra to commemorate Tibetan Uprising Day, by our Tibetan community members from Newcastle, Central Coast, Sydney, Western Sydney, NSW South Coast, Canberra and Melbourne to stand together in defence of Tibetan religious freedom and self-determination.

Through your support, we also created a special art installation made with Tibetan prayer flags. The installation symbolised His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s lifelong contributions to peace, nonviolence and interfaith harmony, and served as a powerful visual reminder of the values the Tibetan movement continues to uphold. Thank you to our ATC members who sponsored prayer flags for our art installation.

Our gathering outside Parliament House was strengthened by the support of Australian parliamentarians who took the time to stand with the Tibetan community and the Australia Tibet Council. We sincerely thank Senators Barbara Pocock, David Shoebridge, Steph Hodgins-May and Lidia Thorpe, as well as MPs Dr Sophie Scamps, David Smith and Kate Chaney, for speaking at our rally and showing their solidarity.

Inside the Chamber of House of Representatives, Sarah Witty MP and David Smith MP made speeches in support of Tibet, also acknowledging the significance of Tibetan Uprising Day.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to the Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Mr Karma Singey for speaking at the rally, and to Amnesty International Australia for their powerful words and continued support.

Your presence, support and advocacy help ensure that Tibet remains firmly on the agenda in Australia. Together, we will continue to call on the Australian Government to stand up for the rights of the Tibetan people and protect the integrity of Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
