Illustration based on the evidence and experiences of Tibetans affected by China’s colonial boarding schools.

Since the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1949, the Chinese government has gradually implemented programs designed to erase the Tibetan language — seeking to wipe out any memory of Tibet and its distinctive culture.

The most alarming aspect of this policy is its direct targeting of Tibetan children. Children are being torn from their homes, families, and communities and placed into state-run boarding schools where their mother tongue is suppressed and their Tibetan identity systematically stripped away. This forced removal and linguistic deprivation denies them the fundamental right to learn and thrive in their own language and culture.

Without intervention, China’s policies will have devastating long-term consequences — threatening not only the survival of the Tibetan language but also the very fabric of Tibetan identity, cultural heritage, and religious practice.

The Heartbeat of a People

For over a millennium, the Tibetan language has been more than just words. It is the intrinsic core of a unique culture, a medium for Tibetan Buddhism’s philosophy of compassion, and the very fabric of identity. Nurtured in Tibetan monasteries and homes, this rich linguistic tradition has shaped a way of life defined by kindness and resilience.

1000+ years
The Tibetan Language has flourished for over a millenium, since its creation by the learned scholars from the Tibetan empire in the 7th century.

What We Stand to Lose

The consequences of inaction are profound and irreversible. When a language fades, it takes with it unique ways of seeing the world, passed down through generations.
