Dharamsala Insight

Banner Insight 2018

Planning is complete for this year's Dharamsala Insight Tour, commencing in Delhi on 10 November 2018. Would you like to join us for this amazing 14-day experience?

The 2017 Insight Tour to Dharamsala was an amazing experience it was for our 13 travellers. The highlight was, of course, our meeting with the Dalai Lama and hearing his inspiring words, which will stay with us always.
There were so many moving experiences during our time in Dharamsala - meetings with young Tibetans running NGOs, visits to Norbulingka Institute and the Dolma Ling nunnery, evenings with writer/activists Bhuchung D Sonam and Tenzin Tsundue, the generous social work of the amazing team at Lha, the list is very long.

ATC has been leading small groups on this emotional and inspiring journey to the heart of the Tibetan community in exile since 2011. We spend 10 days in the mountain town of McLeod Ganj (Upper Dharamsala) experiencing the daily life of this relaxed yet lively Tibetan centre.

You'll hear the moving stories of life in Tibet from newly-arrival refugees, witness the enduring strength of the Tibetan struggle as we visit cultural and political organisations, and hear from young and passionate Tibetan activists about their dreams of a future Tibet.

Long-time ATC supporter Jill Lancashire shares some of her experiences on the November 2010 Dharamsala Insight Tour.

Day 1: Arriving in Dharamsala It's been 25 years since I've been here in McLeod Ganj (Dharamsala). It's almost unrecognisable. ...

Tonight three monks from 'Learning and Ideas for Tibet' cooked dinner for us. Geshe Lobsang Gyatsen told us his tale of torture and humiliation at the hands of the Chinese. His words explained what happened, which was shocking, but his manner was measured and detached.

Day 6: Tibetan Children's Village Got up at 6:00 and headed for a kora around HH the Dalai Lama's temple. Dashed back to catch a taxi to the Tibetan Children's Village (TCV) in Upper Dharamsala. Given the visit was organised by the ATC we got a red carpet tour by the school's deputy director. It houses about 2,000 kids. In total, the TCV looks after approximately 16,000 children across India. 60% of the students at Upper TCV were from Tibet. Their parents have sent them to get a good, traditional education which allows them to preserve their culture.

Day 9 The highlight of today was Tibetan astrologer Tsering Choezom at Men-Tsee-Khang, the Tibetan Medical and Astrology Institute. She's been doing charts for 22 years and knows them like the back of her hand. What to say? She floored me. She outlined key features of my character that I'd only just identified myself. Apart from those showstoppers she mentioned longevity, periods of future ill health, periods where projects would be successful and other things. Given she confirmed what I knew to be true, I'm assuming the rest will be true too...logical? It's incredible that all she had to go on was my birth date and time. Mark was in the room too and I listened to her nail his traits and characteristics 100%. Some people received better news than others. Many have food for thought.
